The whole family, cast in a child's first learning games.
Children's learning apps teach through characters the child has never met. Folkaboo makes the cast the people they love — turning a few family photos into talking, dancing characters inside short learning games set in a world like home. A working prototype with nine games is live with its first family in Bali.
Strangers teach our children. Family watches through a phone.
The biggest learning apps — Lingokids, ABCmouse, Khan Academy Kids — teach through characters the child has never met.
Parents want screens that bring the family closer, not ones that pull a child away from it.
18.5M Indian, 11.7M Chinese and 7M Filipino emigrants live away from home (UN DESA 2024). Grandparents watch children grow up through a phone.
Family photos in. A living little world out.
Each photo becomes a puppet that blinks, talks and dances, on a drawn body, inside nine short skill games — colours, counting, shapes, patterns, memory, names — set in the family's own world, with an original song in the child's name.
Illustration. Real games use the family's own photos, kept private.
Designed around the research — not yet proven by it
Preschoolers learned new words better from personalised book pages featuring their own photo and name.
Kucirkova et al., 2014
From birth, children prefer familiar faces, and preschoolers learn more readily from people they know.

Toddlers learn more from screens when the experience is social and meaningful. Folkaboo is built for co-play.

The product itself hasn't been studied. An independent evidence pilot with a university partner is part of the plan. We design to WHO and AAP screen guidance: 5–10 minute sessions, no streaks, autoplay or push nags.
25 million households, bottom-up
Our modelling; assumptions in the data room. Comparables: Wonderbly (10M+ personalised books, acquired by Penguin Random House 2025), Hooray Heroes (~€27M sales, 2019), Lingokids ($120M raise, 2025).
Concierge first, then self-serve, then gifts
| Offer | Price | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Made for your family (concierge) | $149–299 one-off | Early revenue and filmed reactions |
| Family World (self-serve) | $29–49, or $6.99/month | Scale and retention |
| Gift a world | Gift cards; printed storybooks later | Grandparent spending |
Education apps pay about $19–24 to win a paying user against ~$45 of 12-month value. Paid ads alone don't work for a $6.99 subscription — so we lead with concierge and gift tiers, and let partners who already hold the photos cut acquisition cost.
Win Bali by hand. Let partners carry it.

Learning apps star strangers. Keepsakes don't teach.
The whole family, every day — not a one-off video or book.
Nine skill games, levels after each win, seasonal packs.
Faces processed in-house, never sent to AI vendors or used for training — a selling point under the 2025 COPPA amendment.
Precedent acquirers: Penguin Random House (Wonderbly), Mattel (Caribu), Spin Master (Toca Boca, Sago Mini), KIRKBI (BrainPOP), Netflix (StoryBots).
Prove it cheaply. Then raise.
Oct 2026 – Jan 2027: no outside money. Hand-built family games, photographer partners and a Christmas gift-card test — about $30K, mostly recovered from sales. If the go/no-go numbers are hit, raise $550K in Q1 2027 for 18 months.
- ✿ 5+ paid family builds
- ✿ 30%+ of shown parents would pay $99
- ✿ Children coming back by day 7
- ✿ 3 photographer partners signed
By mid-2028: 2,000+ paying families, a self-serve build under an hour, 3+ partners live, and independent pilot results — setting up a $2–4M seed.
What we're testing before we raise
| Risk | How we handle it |
|---|---|
| Willingness to pay | The concierge phase tests a $99+ price on real parents before a dollar is raised. |
| Churn after the novelty | Seasonal packs, new family members and grandparent turns; day-7 and day-30 return measured from the first families. |
| Children's privacy | Verified parental consent, in-house face processing, deletion after build, private links; kids' privacy counsel before the first paid order. |
| Screen-time concerns | Short sessions built for co-play, no streaks or nags, aligned with WHO and AAP guidance. |
| Well-funded AI players add family | Speed, the curriculum, and a privacy posture they don't publish — plus distribution partners who hold the photos. |
Looking for parent angels, play-and-learning operators and partners who hold family photos.
